Sarah Scoonover of Knoxville, TN, and Jacob Appel of New York, NY are co-winners of the Fiction Award. The pair won for very different sorts of stories, although each addressed human implications of warfare. Both will be published and winners will share the $1,000 first prize. Scoonover won for "Vietnam Visits Uncle Bill," a surreal, nearly magical, account of the narrator's fictive intrusion into her uncle's hidden experiences and projections regarding Vietnam and the beautiful woman and others encountered there. Appel won for "The Appraisal," a third-person account of a mortally ill woman's decision to set herself on fire to protest the war in Iraq.
Harry Bauld of New York, NY, won the $1,000 New Millennium Writings Poetry Award for his poem, "Alaska," an account of the author's struggle to land a huge salmon in the Kenai using only his bare hands, after he came upon it in a shallow stream while running.
Ralph Ryan of Redding CA, and M. Norman Risch of Richmond, VA, are co-winners of the Nonfiction Award. Both will be published and will share the $1,000 first prize. Ryan won for "Wildfire, Hellfire," an account of what it's like to survive passage of a wildfire protected only by a portable back-pack shelter. Risch won for "The Day My Son Died," the first person account of a horrendous event with an unexpected, yet well-earned twist. Both writers draw upon particular personal experiences the likes of which few ever experience.
Susan Chiavelli of Santa Barbara, CA, won the $1,000 Short-Short Fiction Award for her moody story, "Winter Oranges," regarding revelations contained in a modest Christmas present.
Those receiving Honorable Mentions are listed as follows, by category. All Poetry runners-up will be published in the next issue. The top 3 runners-up in Short-short fiction are eligible for publication. Unfortunately, space constraints prevent making the same offer in fiction and nonfiction categories.
